Always the Dancer
Oil on Canvas | 90 x 120 cm
Looks consistently deceive. We present ourselves outwardly to fit a profile, be it to overcome inherent insecurities or to portray a front consistent with an image we wish to project. We all make judgement calls on our fellow humans too, often based on little more than a fleeting impression or a brief engagement. Yet when we peel back some the layers, we expose a depth that may surprise, shock or leave us in awe.
This painting explores some of these themes. As a young adult, the subject of this painting was a professional ballet dancer. Now a senior manager at a major organisation, she’s principal for a very different corps. Leading a team of data scientists and technologists, few of her colleagues would have any perception of her previous life. Yet even today the love of dance moves her to her core. Perhaps there are still times when the dancer within steps out again? I would like to think so.
